Signs your water heater needs attention
- No hot water at all, or hot water that runs out faster than it used to.
- Water pooling around the base of the tank or dripping from the relief valve.
- Rusty or discolored hot water.
- Popping, rumbling or banging sounds from the tank.
- A pilot light that keeps going out on a gas unit.
Repair or replace?
Many faults, such as a failed thermostat, heating element, thermocouple or relief valve, can be repaired. A tank that is leaking from the body usually cannot. The plumber will tell you which applies after looking at the unit.
Types of water heaters
Tank water heaters
Gas and electric tank units store heated water and are the most common type. Replacing like for like is usually the simplest job.
Tankless water heaters
Tankless units heat water as you use it, so they do not run out the way a tank can. Switching from a tank often needs changes to gas lines, venting or electrical supply, so ask the plumber what your home would need.
Heat pump water heaters
These use less electricity than a standard electric tank. They need space and airflow around them, so the plumber can tell you whether your location suits one.
What to have ready
- The brand, size and age of your current unit, from the label on the tank.
- Whether it runs on gas or electricity.
- Where it is installed: garage, closet, attic or basement.
Common questions
How long does a water heater last?
Many tank water heaters last somewhere around 8 to 12 years, depending on water quality and maintenance. The plumber can usually tell the age from the serial number on the label.
Is a tankless water heater worth it?
It depends on how much hot water your household uses, what changes your home would need and how long you plan to stay. Ask the plumber to compare the options for your home.
Do I need a permit to replace a water heater?
Many cities require a permit for water heater replacement. A licensed plumber will know what applies in Abilene.
